Cutting Back on Work

Amy writes, "I'm a manager during the day and have a small business on the side. I want to cut back my hours at my day job in order to focus on myself, family and small business. I need assistance on how to propose cutting back hours during the week, or having one half or full day off a week. I already take work home in order to make up anytime missed due to the baby being sick or whatever. Help!"

Answer: Seems you are asking how to set more boundaries at work. Boundaries help you protect what is truly important to you. Now that you've identified that you need more flexibly with your work time, be clear with what you need specifically and how you can continue meeting the needs of your current employer.

Decide what's livable for you and draft a proposal you can present to your boss. Include a description of how the work will get done, the benefits for the company, etc. Be sure to address all the concerns you anticipate from your employer.

Then, meet with your boss to present your proposal at a time he/she can focus and give you full attention. Don't be threatening but be clear of your alternatives in your own mind. You can continue working in the same manner, re-negotiate more suitable arrangements, find a job in a more family-friendly environment, leave the job and pursue your small business full-time using your own flexible work arrangement, or perhaps, a combination. If your boss seems hesitant, be willing to establish a trial period for a specified number of months. Check-in frequently during this period and make adjustments as necessary.
