What Days Should I Work?

Sande writes, "I am returning to work part-time (3 days/wk). Which scenario would be better for my baby: off M, T, work W-TH-F OR work M-W-F and be off T and TH? I want to know which would cause the least amount of stress for her."

Answer: Congratulations on your new baby and for negotiating a flexible part-time work schedule. Because every baby is different and work situations differ, as well, I'm not able to tell you precisely what would work best for you. Another option that perhaps you didn't think about is to work 5 half days.

To decide what's best for you: consider your work--will you be more effective to be able to work consistently (3 days in a row)? Would having every other day off be disruptive to the flow of work? Would it be plausible to work 5 consecutive mornings (or afternoons)? Also, consider your baby and you--how does your baby deal with separation? How do you handle organizing and planning at home and work? What do you want to be able to accomplish at work, and at home?

Establish a routine and it will help things run smoothly. Select an approach and see how it works. No matter how you decide to work your part-time hours, make it effective for you. If you find it's not working, adjust it accordingly.

Warmly, Coach Natalie
