Returning to School

Jamillah writes, "How can I go back to school and receive my bachelor's degree in Paralegal studies while balancing work and family? I'm a single mom and I do not have anyone who can watch my kids at night while I go to school. Do you think I should apply to one of these schools on the internet?"

Answer: Going back to school will take an incredible amount of perseverence and determination, but it's possible if you are committed and self-motivated! You will need to arrange time for classes, studying, and of course the expenses (e.g., tuition, materials, computer, registration fees). You may want to look into suitable childcare or swap babysitting with a friend so that you have adequate time for schooling; some schools offer on-site childcare at affordable rates to accommodate parents who are students. However, if it's not possible to arrange appropriate childcare, or if you prefer the flexibility of distance learning, that option may be most suitable for you!

A large percentage of students who enroll in distance learning programs are working adults with time and money constraints. Distance learning options for Paralegal studies may include virtual courses over the Internet, correspondence courses, home study courses, and independent study courses. Investigate any distance learning programs thoroughly before you invest your money and your time to ensure their program will satisfy the requirements for becoming a paralegal. Be sure they are a nationally accredited paralegal program. Do not rely solely on information provided by the school because they are undoubtedly marketing their programs.

The professional associations for Paralegals may be able to offer you support and guidance as you explore this profession (check into the National Association of Legal Assistants, the National Federation of Paralegal Associations, or other similar organizations). Hope you find the ideal program that will give you the skills and education you need to make your dream a reality!

Best regards, Coach Natalie
