Surviving your weekend chores with an extra set of little hands

No matter how much help we have, there are always chores to be done on the weekends. But if you are like most working mothers, the weekends are also a time for spending additional hours with our children.

A Saturday morning can often become busier than the workweek when you are trying to juggle birthday parties, team sports, household chores and quality free time. It's possible to turn sweeping, folding laundry or waxing furniture into fun activities to share with your child with the right forethought and attitude. You might even allow your child to develop an appreciation for pitching in.

We've put together some ideas for you to try next time you find yourself being tugged between the broom and your baseball player.

• Lower your expectations. Don't expect to complete the entire task at one time.

• Allow yourself additional time. It will certainly take you longer to do a chore with a child at your elbow.

• Turn on some fun loud music to dance to while vacuuming or mopping.

• Take the advice of the Jiminy Cricket and whistle while you work.

• Expect interruptions and you'll be pleasantly surprised if they don't happen.

• Focus on the memories you are creating for your child and you'll find additional joy in the chore.

• Have races to see who will finish their chore first.

Remember, your child is always watching your response and reactions. If household chores cause you to moan and groan, expect the same reaction from him when you ask for help in cleaning.
