Create Your Own Slider Bar!

Q: Dear Nana,
Sliders are all the rage on restaurant menus, which makes sense considering they are the perfect size for busy grandchildren’s dinner plates. Can you give me a couple of slider ideas that I can use to impress my family?
Building a Smaller Burger in Biloxi

A: Dear Building a Smaller Burger,
I have just the right thing for you to use to dazzle your family: my Slider Bar. I admit it (with a bit of personal history here) – I’m a product of Eat ’n Park, Big Mac’s, Burger King, Wendy’s and any other burger joint that sprang up during my youth. But, nothin’ – no nothin’ – beats the taste of those little-bitty, bite-size, square burgers, topped with sautéed onions, dill pickle chips, mustard, and ketchup, all crammed into a white paper sack and found at White Castle.

Today, sliders appear on the menus of high-end restaurants as appetizers or pub fare. The condiments are upgraded, the onions are caramelized, and a heap of fresh veggies top the burgers. Whatever the ingredients, however they are stacked between the soft buns, sliders are just plain FUN!

My slider bar is created by plating all of the ingredients individually onto platters for easy assembly. Your guests heap their mini-sammies in whatever amount and style they desire. Toppings include all types of cheese (blue, Swiss, cheddar, feta), pickles (dill, sweet and spicy), veggies (grilled and sliced fresh), condiments (Roquefort dressing, tangy mustard), and anything else that you want to stack on your burger. You can also mix and match the burgers using beef, turkey, veal, lamb, and even salmon. Check out my recipe for Really Good Turkey Burger Sliders to help you slide into Sliders today!
