Shed the extra winter weight

According to the May Clinic Health Letter, here are some ways to cut calories and lose weight:

  • Eat Smaller Portions. Cut your portion size of red meat from 8 ounces to 3 ounces and save 250 to 300 calories. A 3-ounce serving of meat is about the size of a deck of cards.

  • Use healthful cooking methods such as baking, broiling, grilling, poaching, roasting and steaming.

  • Increase your activity. These activities each burn off about 150 calories: gardening for 30 to 45 minutes, walking 2 miles in 30 minutes, and bicycling 5 miles in 30 minutes. If it's too cold outside, try walking on a treadmill or riding a stationary bike.

    Ways around the time crunch
As a working mother you are always feeling the short on time, so you will have to find creative ways to squeeze in exercise.

  • Find ways to incorporate exercise into your day. Even if you can't find 30 minutes at one time you can still find ways to increase your activity. Try these suggestions:
       • Take the stairs instead of the elevator
       • Park farther away from the building so you can walk more
       • Try doing butt squeezes while reading email

  • Try a high intensity activity like jumping rope and you will burn 110 calories in 10 minutes.
