Q. I am 41 years old, weigh 115 and am 5'3." My BMI is not high, but I look fat around the hips with cellulite and bumps. I am one size bigger in the hips than at the breast. I run 50 minutes 5 times/week and cycle 40km 2 times/week. I also do leg lifts and weight training. I eat low fat and lots of fresh veggies. I don't use alcohol, coffee, sodas, etc. I never had this problem, but for the past year, nothing I do helps. What could be the problem? -- S.

A. Your problem is one that is common to so many women. Many women are genetically predisposed to storing fat in the hip area and it can be a battle shave the inches off and develop a more smooth contour.

You are definitely not lacking in the cardiovascular activity category and it sounds like you make wise choices regarding your diet. I believe that the solution lies in incorporating an appropriate weight training program into your exercise regime. I realize that you are doing some weight training now, but if your not on an appropriate program, you can actually do yourself more harm then good.

To reduce the hip are, work with low weights (about 75% of your maximum) and high repetitions. (approximately 15 or 20). Pick 4 lower body exercises such as any variety of squats, lunges, leg curls and inner and outer thigh exercises. Move from one exercise to another without giving yourself a rest. Do this for about a half hour four or five days a week.

Change your routine at least once a week. The variety of exercises will get you the best results.
