Summer Getaway Inspiration: How Actress & Mother Lori Loughlin Plans a Family Vacation

Memorial Day is around the corner, marking the start of a much-anticipated summer travel season. Whether it's a beach getaway or a theme park adventure, summer is the perfect opportunity to plan a family vacation and take advantage of the warm, sunny months ahead.

We sat down with "Full House" alum, actress Lori Loughlin to get her take on the importance of family vacations. Loughlin lives in Los Angeles with her husband, fashion designer Mossimo Giannulli, and their three children. Starring in the upcoming Disney feature "Old Dogs" with John Travolta and Robin Williams (out next year), Loughlin is currently working on the "Clear to Drive" campaign to help prevent drowsy driving. But in the midst of her busy schedule, she always makes family a priority which includes planning summer vacations. Here's what she had to say:

What are your favorite family vacation destinations? My two favorite family vacation destinations are Aspen and Hawaii. I love when we all go skiing as a family in Aspen. It's such a great thing to do with my husband and kids because we get to spend entire days together. Starting from the minute we wake up, we're together all day having meals as a family, exercising, watching movies and just spending good quality time.

How do you prepare your family for trips? Are there any key items you're always sure to pack? I try to pack my kids suitcases a few days before so they are ready to go. This way, right before the trip I just have to worry about packing for myself. I make it a point not to leave the packing until the last minute because it helps me not be crazed the day before we are supposed to leave.

When packing the essentials for a family trip I'm always sure to bring along a "mini-medicine" cabinet. Items I like to pack include a pain reliever for my children because you never know what kind of aches can arise. Since I'm an allergy sufferer, I always pack Claritin because it's the only thing that relieves my worst allergy symptoms all day long without making me drowsy. I also always bring my favorite shampoo, body lotion and sunscreen. My favorite is Coppertone - I love the smell because it makes me think of the beach.

What are your vacation plans for this summer? We have a trip planned to Hawaii with the whole family , which I'm really looking forward to. Hopefully we'll also get to Aspen for a week because we've always wanted to go during the summer.

Why do you think it's important for families to take vacations together? We all have such busy schedules, so it's nice to spend quality time together as a family while we're on vacation. Vacations are a way for us to all get away from our busy lives. I think it's so important to take this time to regroup and just focus on the family.

Road Trip Safety
According to a recent survey, four in 10 Americans (38%) report that there have been times when they were driving and realized that the medicine they had taken was making them drowsy. As a spokesperson for the Claritin "Clear to Drive" campaign, Lori Loughlin hopes to raise awareness of drowsy driving, especially during a busy travel season. The campaign offers tips for drowsy driving prevention, such as making sure people know how important it is to check medicine labels for warnings about drowsiness before they get behind the wheel.
