New Look

Question: I'm a 30 yrs. old, mother of two girls who is looking for a new look. I should be amazed that people still consider me as being in my early 20's but I want a new look, a more sexy and attractive look, at the same time not having to dress provocative. I get plenty of compliments on my legs and how toned my arms are, but is very insecure about showing them. Give me some fashion advice for work and for when I am not at work.
Marsha

Answer: Toned arms and legs are features that may not always be with you. Be proud of them and enjoy them now before you have a lot more birthdays. You can don a sexy silhouette in a classy way without looking cheap, inappropriate, or overtly provocative. Be prepared to stretch out of your comfort zone initially, until you are accustomed to a new, more body-conscious look. With practice and compliments, your confidence will increase.

Many women experience a need for change after having children. I applaud you for wanting a more attractive look. It's important for young mothers to keep their attractive / sex-appeal aspect alive and not move into a frumpy matronly image. While motherhood is a major role, it is but one aspect of the total you.

Sleeveless apparel has been (and is) extremely fashionable for all ages. While it is not appropriate for the workplace, it is perfect for your social and off time. Since you have toned arms, there is no reason for you to feel self-conscious or improper when wearing sleeveless tops or dresses. See-through sheer sleeves are also fashionable this season (Fall 2002). Toned arms showcase well in the sheers, too.

Short skirts, up to 3 or 4 inches above the knee, can be worn in the workplace. For the office, wear flesh-toned hosiery to show off your legs. In your off time, you can enjoy wearing no hosiery with your short skirts. Avoid showing cleavage in the workplace, save that look for relaxing or for a night out.

Take a day and try on a lot of different styles. Leave the serious judge aspect of yourself at home and just enjoy getting to know your body and how it relates to more form-fitting fashions. Discover what's flattering and what's not. If possible, buy a couple of new outfits and bring some reality to the changes you desire to make. At the least, make mental notes for future shopping trips. Enjoy your new look.

Best of luck to you,
Sherry Maysonave
