Weight Loss

Q. I walk 4-6 times a week, every week for minimum 45 minutes. I have done this for one year and lost about 17 lbs over this time. Many of my friends think this weight loss is slow--I disagree and feel that I am doing fine. I don't intend to lost more than the same amount next year at which time I will just continue to maintain the exercise. I also walk stairs often, dance twice a week and have generally felt a tremendous improvement in energy. What is interesting to me is that I have lost this weight despite eating a large amount of choclate and sweets which are my nemesis. Can you explain how this could be?

A. First I'd like to congratulate on your accomplishments so far.

Regarding your question, yes ... I can explain. It's basic math. To gain 1 pound, your body needs to store 3500 calories more than it uses over a period of time. Likewise, if you use 3500 calories more than you take in, you will lose 1 pound.

Now there are several factors that determine how many calories your body uses each day including how much lean muscle mass you have, how much physical activity you engage in each day, how much sleep you get and genetics. Each of these factors plays a role in how your body uses and stores calories.

Bottom line is, even though you are eating chocolates and candy, you are still burning more calories than you are taking in. One thing I would caution you about is the fact that if you are eating "large amounts" of these foods like you say, that you may be compromising your nutritional needs in the process. My recommendation is that you follow the food guide pyramid for recommended daily intake of each food group.

Good Luck,
