Food Presentation

Answer: Garnishing the plate is one of the most important parts of cooking. Our appetite for a great meal is enhanced by its appearance. Most often, it is wise to garnish with something that is edible and blends with the flavor of the dish. Parsley is a great start. However, any fresh herb will work well as a garnish. For example you may bundle several sprigs of different herbs together and place that bundle on the plate. Or, you can chop fresh herbs and sprinkle the plate before you place the food on top.

For Mexican inspired dishes, you can slice tortillas into thin sticks and fry them in hot oil as a garnish. Likewise you can fry spinach or sage for a similar, yet striking garnish.

Curls of Pecorino Romano cheese are perfect on the top of a fresh veggie salad. Chopped hard-boiled eggs are wonderful on sautéed green beans. Julienned sun-dried tomatoes make a fun addition to a basic baked potato.

The secret is that the garnish should enhance the flavor of the food – and not detract from the dish in any way.

Be inventive! Anything that you can eat, can easily morph into an eye-appealing garnish.
